ATV Buying Guide: 6 Tips from a former Pro ATV Rider

Choosing the right ATV can be daunting with hundreds of models and types to choose from. That's why we asked Larry Kopp, former professional ATV racer and owner of Fullflight Racing, what people should look for before buying one.

1. Match the ATV to Your Riding Style

Not all quads are built for the same purpose. Some are optimized for motocross, others for TT/flat track, woods riding, or desert racing. Know where you’ll ride most and choose accordingly.

2. Factor in Your Experience Level

Beginners and casual riders don’t need the same aggressive setup as a pro-level racer. Mid-range, all-around bikes are usually a better and safer fit for newer riders.

3. Top All-Around Picks: Honda 400EX and Suzuki Z400

Larry’s go-to recommendations for versatile riding are the 400EX and Z400. These are ideal for woods riding, play riding, and general use—reliable, forgiving, and capable.

4. Best Bikes for Motocross

If you’re hitting the track, consider:

  • Suzuki LTR450

  • Kawasaki KFX450

  • Honda TRX450R

  • Honda 250R

  • Yamaha YFZ450

  • Yamaha Raptor 700

These machines offer strong performance and geometry for track use—even straight out of the box.

5. Upgrade Suspension and Geometry for Better Performance

Even solid stock setups can benefit from upgrades. Larry recommends enhancing geometry with aftermarket shocks and A-arm kits to improve handling, especially for more aggressive riding.

6. Start Stock, Upgrade Later

Many modern sport ATVs are track- or trail-ready without major mods. But if you want to step things up, focus on the suspension first—it’s where you’ll feel the most gain.
